Samone
Feminine · “he has heard”
Samone is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 2,216 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Samone is Simone spelled the way Americans say it. The first vowel of Simone is unstressed and reduces to almost nothing in English, so an a and an i sound identical there — which makes this spelling honest rather than mistaken. Underneath is a Hebrew name that is a small piece of narrative: he has heard.

The story of Samone
Simon was one of the most common Jewish names of the first century and it is everywhere in the New Testament, borne by Peter before he was Peter and by several others. French built Simone from Simon in the ordinary way and it became widely used in the twentieth century. American families receiving it wrote it as they heard it, which is where Samone, Samohne and Simmone come from. The a in this spelling is not an error so much as a transcription: it records the reduced vowel that English actually produces, rather than the full one the French spelling implies.
Meaning
he has heard
Hebrew Shimon comes from a verb meaning to hear, and Genesis attaches the name to a moment: Leah names her second son that because the Lord heard that she was unloved. So the name records an answer to something rather than describing a quality. Simon is the Greek and Latin form; Simone is the French feminine. The meaning survives every step of that intact, and the American respelling changes none of it.

suh-MOHN, two syllables, stress at the back, the final e silent. That is the American reading of Simone as well. French gives the first syllable a fuller vowel, see-MOHN, which is the pronunciation this spelling has quietly abandoned.

The Valera test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Samone's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Valera climbed just as high around 1910, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Valera's path sketches the road Samone is walking now.
Samone sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The spelling matches how the name is genuinely said in English, which Simone only approximates.
- Sam and Mona are both waiting inside it, and they sit in completely different registers.
- The stress at the end gives it a clean finish against a front-stressed surname.
- Simone is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected toward it on nearly every document.
- The a obscures the connection to Simon and Simone, which is the part of the history most people recognize.
- This spelling is recorded for boys as well, though very rarely, so a boy carrying it will be read as a girl on paper.
