Ryli
Feminine · “Irish O Raghallaigh”
Nobody knows where the life of Riley comes from. The phrase turns up in American songs and print around 1900, meaning an easy comfortable existence, and every attempt to identify a Riley has failed. It is one of a small set of English idioms built on a personal name that belongs to nobody.

Our story of Ryli
Our reading is that the phrase is worth mentioning because its failure to be explained is instructive. Idioms built on names usually have a traceable source: a real Hobson with a livery stable, a real Bob who was somebody's uncle, an argued-over but researchable Jack Robinson. The life of Riley resists. It appears in American vaudeville songs from the 1880s and 90s, at least two of which have been proposed as the origin, and the phrase may predate both. Various Irish Rileys have been suggested and none fits. The most likely explanation is the dullest: Riley was simply a common Irish American surname, and the phrase meant something like living like an Irishman who has done well, with the name standing for a type rather than a person. That is how most name-based idioms actually work, and it is why they are usually unsolvable.

Irish O Raghallaigh, or Old English ryge leah, rye clearing
Riley has two sources. One is the Irish surname O Raghallaigh, anglicized Reilly and Riley, built on a personal name of uncertain meaning. The other is an English place name and surname from Old English ryge, rye, and leah, a clearing. Both are current in American use. Ryli is a modern respelling; it peaks in 2009.

The Cira test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ryli's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cira climbed just as high around 1945, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cira's path sketches the road Ryli is walking now.
Ryli sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
