Where it comes from

The story of Cira

Cyrus the Great built the Achaemenid empire in the sixth century before the common era and is remembered in the Hebrew scriptures with unusual warmth for a foreign king, because he ended the Babylonian exile. His name reached Europe through Greek historians and the Bible, and Italy and Spain made Ciro of it — a genuinely common name in Naples, where a local saint of that name is venerated. Cira is the feminine, used in both languages, and it reached American records with Italian and Spanish-speaking families in the early twentieth century.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The Old Persian Kūruš has no settled derivation. Greek writers offered explanations — one connects it to a word for the sun — and modern scholarship treats all of them as guesses. The name belongs to a layer older than the records that carry it, which is common for the founders of empires and rare for anything else.

Pronouncing Cira

SEE-rah

Two syllables, stress on the first. In Italian the c before i is a ch, giving CHEE-rah; in Latin American Spanish it is an s, giving SEE-rah; in Spain it would be a th. Three languages, three opening sounds, one spelling — which is the practical fact about this name.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters and two open syllables — it fits anywhere and survives any accent.
  • It is a real name in two European languages rather than a modern coinage.
  • It has a documented and consequential historical figure standing behind the men's version.
  • It sits well after long or consonant-heavy surnames.
What to consider
  • The opening consonant is said differently in Italian, Spanish and English, so relatives may not agree.
  • Kira, Sira and Sierra all sit close in sound and will be written instead.
  • Its meaning cannot be given, since the Persian original was already unexplained in antiquity.
