Latin ritus, a rite, and Sanskrit rta, the cosmic order, are the same inherited word. Both come from a root meaning to fit together properly, and both describe correctness: in Rome the correct performance of a ceremony, in the Vedas the correct arrangement of the universe. A word about ritual and a word about the order of the stars have one ancestor.

Where it comes from

The story of Rito

The Indo-European root behind ritus and rta is one of the more productive ones and its descendants are startlingly varied. From it come Latin ritus, a ceremony, and ratio, a reckoning; Greek arithmos, a number, whence arithmetic; English art, from Latin ars, a skill or fitting-together; English arm, the limb that joins; and Sanskrit rta, the order of things. Underlying all of them is the idea of pieces fitted correctly. That is why a rite is not merely a ceremony but a correctly performed one, and why the Vedic rta is not simply nature but nature in proper working order. Whether the Spanish name descends from the noun or from a clipped saint's name cannot be settled from the record, and both readings are current in families that carry it.

Meaningscholars disagree

Latin ritus, a rite or ceremony

Rito is the Spanish word for a rite, from Latin ritus. As a personal name it is more likely to be a short form of a longer Spanish name, most commonly Margarito or Norberto, since Spanish clips names heavily and irregularly. No saint of the name Rito is in the general calendar. The 1911 peak in the American data sits with Mexican American families, where the clipped form would have been the everyday name.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, easy to say and easy to spell in both languages.
  • It is a real word in Spanish with a clear sense.
  • The Indo-European history behind the word is genuinely deep.
What to consider
  • Whether it is a word name or a clipped saint's name cannot be established.
  • It is very short and will be assumed to be a nickname.
  • It is rare outside Mexican American families.
