The story of Ricco
Celtic and Germanic peoples were neighbors for centuries before either entered written history, and the borrowing went overwhelmingly one way: Germanic took words for rule, iron and office from Celtic, which is what you would expect between a more and a less politically organized society. Rix, king, is the clearest case. It appears in Gaulish personal names recorded by Caesar, Vercingetorix and Dumnorix and Orgetorix, and it entered Germanic as rikaz, giving the -ric of Frederick, Roderick, Alaric, Ulric, Aldrich and Henry, which was Heinrich. English rich and German reich come from the same root; a reich is a realm and a rich man was originally a powerful one, the meanings only separating later. So an Italian short form for a wealthy man and a Gaulish chieftain's title are the same word, five languages and two thousand years apart.
Meaning
Germanic ric, ruler or power
Ricco is an Italian and Spanish short form of Enrico, Ricardo or Federico, built on the Germanic element ric, ruler or power. That element was borrowed into Germanic from Celtic rix, king, itself cognate with Latin rex and Sanskrit raj. Italian ricco also means rich, from the same root by a different path, since wealth and rule were the same word. The American peak is 1977.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Orman test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ricco's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Orman climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Orman's path sketches the road Ricco is walking now.
Ricco sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
