Regino
Masculine · “Latin rex”
Rex hides its own stem. The Latin word for king is rex in the nominative and reg- everywhere else, which is why English has regal, regent and regicide from a word it borrowed as rex. Latin nouns have to be learned in pairs for exactly this reason.

The story of Regino
Latin third-declension nouns frequently have a nominative that conceals the stem, because a sound change altered the final consonant before the ending. Rex is reg-s, with the g and s fusing into an x, so the stem reg- reappears in every other case: regis, regi, regem. The same thing happens in lex, legis, a law, giving legal and legislate; dux, ducis, a leader, giving duke and conduct; nox, noctis, night, giving nocturnal; pax, pacis, peace, giving pacific. English has borrowed extensively from both forms and rarely notices they belong together, which is why lex and legal, nox and nocturnal, look unrelated to a modern reader. It is also why Latin dictionaries print two forms for every noun: the nominative alone does not tell you what the word is.

The Townsend test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Regino's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Townsend climbed just as high around 1934, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Townsend's path sketches the road Regino is walking now.
Regino sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
