Where it comes from

The story of Regan

The Ó Riagáin were an Irish family of Meath and Laois, kin to the O'Neills, and the surname spread widely with emigration, giving the American Reagan and Regan. Shakespeare's Regan is the middle daughter of King Lear, and her name comes from the British legendary material. The Exorcist, released in 1973, has a possessed girl called Regan. As an American boys' given name it belongs to the surname fashion and peaks in 1964, before either of the latter two associations was current; the girls' use is later and larger.

Descendant of Riagán

From Irish Ó Riagáin, from the personal name Riagán. That name's meaning is not settled: a connection to ríogán, a little king, from rí, king, is the usual proposal and is contested; an origin in a word for impulsiveness has also been offered. The Shakespearean Regan in King Lear is separately drawn from Geoffrey of Monmouth's Britain and is not the Irish name.

Regan sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1979, with 89 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a genuine Irish surname with a documented family behind it.
  • Reg works as an ordinary short form.
  • Everyone can say it after one hearing.
What to consider
  • The Exorcist is a strong association for anyone who saw it.
  • Regan in King Lear is one of the play's two villainous daughters.
  • It is now used more for girls than for boys in America.
