The story of Rashod
The root r-sh-d covers guidance, maturity and sound judgment, and it does a lot of work in Islamic vocabulary. The Rashidun, the rightly guided caliphs, are the first four successors to Muhammad, recognized as such by Sunni tradition; the term marks them off from the dynasties that followed. Rushd is the noun for right conduct or maturity, and Ibn Rushd, the philosopher Latin Europe called Averroes, carried it as a family name. In law, rushd is the point at which a young person is judged competent to manage property. As a personal name the root has been in continuous use since the seventh century and traveled with Islam into Persian, Turkish, Urdu, Swahili and Malay, so that the same three consonants name a caliphate, a philosopher, a legal threshold and several million living people.

Rashod's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gwendolyn climbed just as high around 1937, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gwendolyn's path sketches the road Rashod is walking now.
