The story of Raheim
Every chapter of the Quran but one opens with the basmala: in the name of God, al-Rahman al-Rahim. Translators render the two adjectives as the Compassionate and the Merciful, or the Gracious and the Merciful, and both are built on the same three consonants, r-h-m, whose basic noun is rahm, the womb. Classical commentators make the link deliberately, and a well-known hadith has God saying that he made mercy in a hundred parts and sent one down to the earth, from which all the compassion between creatures comes, including a mare lifting her hoof from her foal. Hebrew does the same thing: rachamim, compassion, is built on rechem, a womb. Two Semitic languages independently or jointly derive the word for pity from the same organ, and the metaphor is not decorative but structural.
