The name is chosen twice, by two different kinds of person, one year apart.

Our story of Raekwon
Our reading is that a stage name that becomes a birth name is a distinct and under-noticed mechanism. Most name effects run through characters: parents hear a name in a film or a book and the name is not the performer's own. A stage name is different, because it was already the product of a choice about what sounds good, made by someone in the same naming culture as the parents. When it spreads, the same aesthetic judgment is being made twice, and the second group is ratifying the first. Hip hop produced a large number of these in the 1990s, and the curves are unusually sharp because the source is a single individual with a datable release rather than a diffuse fashion. Raekwon peaks the year after the album that carried it, and falls off within a decade.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Raekwon is a stage name adopted by a member of the Wu-Tang Clan, and no source records a derivation for it. Structurally it is an American formation of the familiar kind: the Rae stem, which also gives Raeshawn and Raevon, and the -quon ending that appears across Daquan, Marquon and Rashquon. Neither element has an inherited meaning.

Raekwon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jed climbed just as high around 1978, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jed's path sketches the road Raekwon is walking now.
Raekwon sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
