Our story of Quintrell
Cornish is a Brittonic language, close kin to Welsh and Breton, and it died as a community language in the eighteenth century. Dolly Pentreath of Mousehole, who died in 1777, is traditionally called the last monoglot speaker, though letters survive from others who still used it after her. What remained was the map. Cornwall's place names are almost entirely Cornish and they are unusually transparent once you have the vocabulary: tre is a farmstead, pol a pool, pen a headland, lan a church enclosure, porth a harbor, carn a rock pile. The old rhyme says that by Tre, Pol and Pen you shall know the Cornishmen. A revival movement from 1904 onward rebuilt the language from those names, from medieval plays and from Bible translations, and it now has several hundred speakers, which makes Cornish one of very few languages to have been brought back from a documented death.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Quintrell has no inherited etymology as an American name. It joins a Quin- opening, from Quinton or Quincy, to the -trell ending seen in Terrell and Montrell. A Cornish village called Quintrell Downs exists, and an English surname Quintrell is recorded, but neither is the source of the American given name. The peak is 1992.
