Where it comes from

Our story of Quanesha

A quarantine is forty days, and the number is sitting in the word: quaranta giorni, the period a ship had to lie at anchor before anyone could land. The practice began in the Adriatic during the plague years — Ragusa imposed thirty days in the thirteen-seventies and Venice extended it to forty — and the forty was chosen partly on medical reasoning about how long a disease took to show itself and partly because forty is a biblical number with a great deal of weight behind it: the flood, the wilderness, the fast. Ships flew a yellow flag and waited in the lagoon. The word kept the number after the period stopped being forty days, so a fourteen-day quarantine is, etymologically, a fourteen-day forty-days, which is the sort of thing English does constantly and never notices.

Fashion outlook

Quanesha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • Nesha detaches cleanly and is a complete name.
  • The spelling is phonetic by English rules and can be written from hearing.
What to consider
  • Quinesha, Kwanesha and Quenisha are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The name is firmly dated to the decades it was made in.
  • No meaning can honestly be given, and the ones circulating online are invented.
