Quincy
Feminine · “estate of Quintus”
Quincy is given to both — 5,434 girls and 27,773 boys since 1880. See Quincy as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Quincy began as a patch of ground in France, became the name of a Norman family, crossed to England and then to Massachusetts, where a colonial family made it a first name by putting it in the middle of a son's name. It has been in continuous American use ever since, spoken the same easy way: two beats, ending in that bright -see. Few names carry a village, a surname and a signature all at once.

The story of Quincy
There are several villages in France named Quincy, each from a Gallo-Roman landholder's name, and Norman families took the place name with them as a surname — de Quincy turns up among the Anglo-Norman nobility of England and Scotland in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The surname reached colonial New England, where the Quincys of Massachusetts gave their name to a town south of Boston and, through marriage, to the sixth president of the United States, John Quincy Adams. That presidential signature is what turned a family surname into a given name Americans recognized on sight. It has been used as a first name here for well over a century, and never stopped.

The Georgetta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Quincy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Georgetta climbed just as high around 1918, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Georgetta's path sketches the road Quincy is walking now.
Quincy is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Instantly spellable for most Americans thanks to the town, the president and the -cy ending; almost no one needs it repeated twice.
- Comes with ready-made short forms — Quin, Quinn, Q — none of which had to be invented.
- Recorded for boys and girls both, so it works either way without becoming a different name.
- A long, unbroken run in American use rather than a recent arrival, and still given every year.
- One of very few Q names in general circulation, which makes it distinctive without being unfamiliar.
- It leans male in the records without settling there. A girl named Quincy will meet forms and teachers that assume a boy — manageable, but worth expecting.
- The spelling competes with Quincey, and Quinn is close enough in sound that people may default to it. Expect to confirm which one you meant.
- The name carries strong cultural associations for adults — a celebrated American musician and a long-running television series — which may come up more with older acquaintances than with classmates.
- A child with this name will likely be the only one in the school, which some children enjoy and others would rather not be.
