Georgetta
Feminine · “farmer”
Georgetta takes the French Georgette and gives it an Italian ending. Both are doing the same job — making a woman's name out of George — and the two suffixes are direct equivalents, the French -ette and the Italian -etta, each meaning something like little. Under both of them sits a Greek word for a man who works the earth.

The story of Georgetta
French built Georgette from Georges in the ordinary way, and the name arrived in English with a second life attached: georgette is also a fabric, a fine crinkled silk that took its name from a Paris dressmaker and was in every department store of the early twentieth century. Italian meanwhile had its own suffix doing the same work, -etta, familiar from Henrietta, Loretta and Rosetta. American families reached for whichever ending sounded right, and Georgetta is the result of the two conventions crossing. The name behind them never changed: a Greek farmer, a soldier-saint, and a name so widespread in Europe that four countries claim him.
Meaning
farmer; one who works the earth
Greek georgos joins ge, earth, with ergon, work — a farmer, plainly and without metaphor. Saint George made the name universal in Christian Europe long before any of the feminine forms existed, and every one of them inherits the farmer without complication. The -etta ending adds no meaning of its own; it is a diminutive, and in names of this shape it functions purely as a marker that the name belongs to a woman.

The Gregoria test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Georgetta's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gregoria climbed just as high around 1903, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gregoria's path sketches the road Georgetta is walking now.
Georgetta sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Etta and Georgie are both waiting inside it, and they sit at opposite ends of formality.
- The root is one of the most widely understood in Europe, so the name explains itself anywhere.
- It is unmistakably a woman's name on paper, which the shorter forms of George are not.
- Georgette is the spelling most people know, and this one will be pulled toward it in writing and in speech alike.
- The -etta ending places the name firmly in an earlier American century, in a way Georgia does not.
- It is four syllables against most surnames, which is a lot of name to say in full, and in practice it will usually be shortened.
