The story of Gregoria
Sixteen popes have taken the name, and one of them fixed the calendar. The Julian year was eleven minutes too long, which had pushed the date of Easter ten days out of position by the sixteenth century, and Gregory XIII's reform of 1582 dropped the extra days and changed the leap-year rule. Catholic countries adopted it within weeks. Protestant ones treated it as a papal trick and waited: Britain and America until 1752, Sweden until 1753, Russia until 1918, Greece until 1923. So the same name sits behind the calendar on every wall and behind one of the longest-running arguments in European history.
Meaning
watchful, awake
From Greek gregorein, to be watchful or to stay awake. It was a deliberately Christian choice of name, taken from the New Testament instruction to watch and be ready. Gregoria is the Spanish and Italian feminine, built from Gregorio.
