The story of Queenie
English had two closely related words from the same root: cwen, which rose, and cwene, which fell. The first became queen, restricted to a king's wife or a female sovereign; the second became quean, which meant an ordinary woman and then a bold or disreputable one, and dropped out of use. Both descend from a Germanic word for a woman that is related to Greek gyne, which English has borrowed separately in gynaecology. Queenie belongs to a nineteenth-century habit of affectionate pet names taken from titles: Queenie, Princess, Duchess, Baby and Missy all appear in the records, and Queenie was common enough to be registered as a legal name in numbers, particularly in Britain and Australia.
