From cwen to Queen
The story of Queen
Cwen meant a woman and cwene a common woman; English promoted the first to a royal title and degraded the second into an insult, from one root. Queen entered American given-name use in the nineteenth century, especially in African-American families, and appears in the registers in current use.
Meaning
queen; woman
From the Old English cwen, 'woman' or 'wife', which also gave 'quean', a derogatory term for a woman — the same word split into a title and an insult. The root is shared with the Greek gyne, 'woman', behind gynaecology. The etymology is documented.
