The story of Prestyn
The English map is a record of medieval landholding and it is legible in detail once you know the vocabulary. Preston and Prestwich mark land supporting a parish priest. Bishopstone, Bishopton and Bishop Auckland mark episcopal estates. Monkton, Monk Fryston and Abbotsbury mark monastic ones. Templecombe, Temple Ewell and Templeton mark holdings of the Knights Templar, and Bruern and Bewdley the Cistercians. Kirkby, from Norse kirkju-byr, is the church settlement in the Danelaw, and shows the same idea in a different language. Together these amount to a survey of who held what before the Dissolution, and they survive because a place name is much harder to change than a landlord. Preston in Lancashire grew from one of them into a city, and its full old name, Priest's Town, was still being explained in guidebooks in the nineteenth century.
