Porsha
Feminine · “of the Porcii”
Porsha is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 4,031 girls against 6 boys since 1880.
Porsha is a Roman aristocratic name with a very unglamorous root and a modern spelling that solves a real problem. Portia belonged to the Porcii, one of the old Roman families, and the family took its name from pigs — porcus, the ordinary Latin word, the one behind pork. The sh spelling separates the name from a German car.

The story of Porsha
The name is known because of two women. The first was Cato's daughter, married to one of the men who killed Caesar and remembered by Roman writers for her nerve; Shakespeare gives her a scene in Julius Caesar. The second is the Portia of The Merchant of Venice, who argues a case in court in disguise and delivers one of the most quoted speeches in English. American use follows the second more than the first. The sh spelling arrived in the twentieth century and does something useful: it moves the written name away from an expensive car whose name is a German surname and has nothing to do with any of this.
Meaningscholars disagree
of the Porcii; from the word for a pig
The Roman family name Porcius is generally connected to porcus, a pig — Roman gens names frequently came from farming, and the Porcii were not embarrassed by it. That reading is standard, though as with all very old Roman family names it is reconstructed rather than recorded. Portia is the feminine. Nothing in the American spelling changes the derivation; the sh replaces a t that English says as sh anyway, in the way it does in nation and patience.

The Zenobia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Porsha's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Zenobia climbed just as high around 1909, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Zenobia's path sketches the road Porsha is walking now.
Porsha sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The spelling makes the pronunciation explicit, which the classical one leaves to convention.
- It descends from a documented Roman family and two of the best-known women in English literature.
- Two syllables with a firm first stress, which sits well against almost any surname.
- The car is said the same way in casual American speech, and the association will be made out loud.
- Portia is the classical spelling and readers who know the plays will prefer it and sometimes correct to it.
- This spelling is recorded for boys as well, though very rarely, so a boy carrying it will be read as a girl on paper.
