The story of Porfirio
The dye came from the hypobranchial gland of murex sea snails, and the process required enormous quantities: ancient sources and modern experiments both suggest thousands of animals for a few grams of dye. It was correspondingly expensive, and the exclusivity became law. Roman sumptuary rules restricted it, and Byzantine practice made it imperial: the emperor wore it, signed in purple ink, and the Great Palace contained a chamber lined with purple porphyry where empresses gave birth. A child born there was porphyrogennetos, born in the purple, which distinguished a legitimate heir born to a reigning emperor from one born before his father's accession. Constantine VII carried the title as part of his name. The English phrase born to the purple descends directly from that room.
Meaning
Greek porphyra, purple
Porfirio is the Spanish form of Porphyrius, from Greek porphyra, the purple dye and the shellfish it came from. The name was borne by a third-century philosopher, Porphyry, and by several saints. The same root gives porphyry, the purple stone, and porphyria, the disease named for the color of the urine. The American peak is 1903.
