The story of Polo
Spanish clipping works from the back of the word where English works from the front. English takes Robert to Rob, William to Will, Elizabeth to Eliza; Spanish takes Guadalupe to Lupe, Concepcion to Chon, Refugio to Cuco, Leopoldo to Polo. The difference is not arbitrary: Spanish stress usually falls near the end of a word, and a clipping that keeps the stressed syllable is more recognizable. English stress falls near the front, so English clips the front. Both languages also have irregular forms that follow no rule at all, Pepe for Jose and Paco for Francisco in Spanish, Peggy for Margaret and Bill for William in English, and these are old and unpredictable. Polo belongs to the regular Spanish class, and its coincidence with the English game word is exactly that.

As a Spanish given name Polo is a short form, most often of Leopoldo, from Germanic liut and bald, people and bold, or of Hipolito, from Greek Hippolytos, loosing horses. As an English word polo comes from Balti pulu, a ball, through the Manipuri game adopted by British officers in the 1850s. Marco Polo's surname is a third and separate thing, an Italian form of Paulus. It peaks in the American data in 1928.
