The story of Patrice
Patricius was the name of the fifth-century Romano-British missionary who became the patron of Ireland, and it spread through Europe from there. French made Patrice, which it uses for men — Patricia serves for women. English-speaking America borrowed the French spelling for girls in the twentieth century, when French forms carried a particular polish, and it rose through the 1950s to a peak in the mid-1960s.
Meaning
noble, patrician
From the Latin patricius, 'nobleman' — a member of the patrician order, defined against the plebeians. The word described a legal class rather than a quality, and it kept that sense for a thousand years.

The Elma test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Patrice's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Elma climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Elma's path sketches the road Patrice is walking now.
Patrice sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is documented, specific and unambiguous.
- The end stress gives it a distinct rhythm against a front-stressed surname.
- It is a real French name rather than an English ornament.
- In French the same spelling is a man's name, so it does not signal sex outside English.
- It is closely dated to the middle of the twentieth century in American records.
