The story of Orren
The story of Odhran is told in Irish and Scottish tradition and not in Adomnan's life of Columba, which is the early and sober source. In it Columba's building on Iona will not stand until a man is buried under the foundations, Odhran offers himself, and three days later Columba has the grave opened, at which Odhran speaks and reports that death and hell are not as described. Columba orders the earth replaced immediately. The oldest burial ground on Iona is Reilig Odhrain and the chapel there is St Oran's. Foundation-sacrifice legends attach to bridges, walls and churches across Europe, and are generally read as folklore rather than record; what is unusual here is that one became attached to a major Christian foundation and was preserved by the tradition rather than removed from it.

Hebrew oren, a pine or ash tree
Orren is most likely a spelling of Oren, Hebrew for a pine or ash tree, mentioned in 1 Chronicles and revived in modern Israeli use. It may equally be an anglicization of Irish Odhran, from odhar, dun or sallow, with a diminutive ending. The two are unrelated. The American peak is 1880.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
