Nigeria
Feminine
Nigeria is a country whose name was proposed in a newspaper. In the eighteen-nineties a journalist writing about the British holdings along the lower Niger suggested calling the territory Nigeria, after the river, and the suggestion stuck — which makes it one of the very few national names with a datable public origin and an author.

The story of Nigeria
The name entered use for the British protectorates and then for the independent country, and it is now carried by the most populous nation in Africa. As an American given name it belongs to a real and identifiable practice: from the nineteen-sixties, African American families began giving daughters the names of African countries and places — Kenya, Asia, Sahara, Zaire, Nigeria — as a deliberate connection rather than a decoration. English speakers have used country names for centuries, and this is the same habit with the map turned. The name is a statement of belonging as much as a name.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The country is named for the river and the river's own name has never been traced with confidence. It is not Latin, despite the resemblance to the word for black; the river was called something like that by European traders long before Latin was consulted. A Tuareg phrase meaning river of rivers has been proposed and is not established, and several West African languages have their own quite different names for the same water. The honest answer stops at the river, which is where the trail ends.

Pronouncing Nigeria
nye-JEER-ee-uh
nye-JEER-ee-uh, four syllables, stress on the second, the g soft. That is the English pronunciation of the country and it is what the name gets. Nigerians themselves say it the same way in English, which is the country's official language.

The Ellaree test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nigeria's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ellaree climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ellaree's path sketches the road Nigeria is walking now.
Nigeria sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It names a real and important country, and the reference is unmistakable to everyone.
- Nia and Ria are both available as short forms and both are standing names elsewhere.
- It belongs to a documented American naming practice with a clear intention behind it.
- A country name carries the country with it, including whatever appears in the news, and none of that is within a family's control.
- The origin genuinely stops at a river whose own name cannot be traced, so a meaning is not available to hand over.
- It reads as a place first and a person second, which is the standing cost of every place name used this way.
