Where it comes from

The story of Nicklaus

German shortened Nikolaus to Klaus by dropping the front, which is unusual for German and is why Klaus, Claus and Niklas all exist as separate names there. Nicklaus with the ck is a Swiss and southern German spelling. In America the name has a second and much stronger association: the golfer Jack Nicklaus, dominant from the 1960s through the 1980s, whose surname is the reason the spelling appears in the given-name records at all, peaking in 1997.

Meaning

Greek "victory of the people"

From Nikolaos: nike, victory, plus laos, the people. The etymology is settled and shared by Nicholas, Nicole, Nikolai, Klaus, Colin, Nicol and Nicklaus. Saint Nicholas of Myra, the fourth-century bishop behind Santa Claus, is the reason the name spread across the whole of Christian Europe.

Pronouncing Nicklaus

NIK-lus

Two syllables with the stress on the first. German Nikolaus is three, NEE-ko-lows, with the au as the vowel of house. The American surname pronunciation compresses it to two, and that is the reading most American bearers use.

Nicklaus sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1997, with 156 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Nicklaus went to 11 boys in 2025, but Niklaus is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 141, which makes it the 787th most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,407 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 12,114 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 155,280 for Nicklaus itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The etymology is settled and the saint behind it is universally known.
  • Nick is the most universally understood short form available.
  • The spelling is genuinely German rather than an American invention.
What to consider
  • Nicholas is far more common and will be assumed.
  • The German and American pronunciations differ in syllable count.
  • The association with one golfer is strong for anyone over about forty.
