Niklaus is the Swiss and German form of Nicholas, worn down over centuries from the Greek Nikolaos into something shorter and squarer in the mouth. It carries the whole long history of that name — the fourth-century bishop of Myra whose feast day gave Europe its gift-giving winter saint — in a spelling that still looks Alpine. Said aloud, it lands in two firm beats and hands you Klaus or Nico without any effort at all.

How old is the name Niklaus?

Niklaus first appears in US birth records in 1979 — 46 years ago. The typical Niklaus is a kid of about 5 — this name's wave is very recent. About 2,400 people named Niklaus are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Niklaus most popular?

Niklaus peaked in 2021, reaching #842 nationally. Today it ranks #1401, 559 places below that high. See the whole 2021 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Niklaus

The Greek name Nikolaos traveled through Latin as Nicolaus and into German as Nikolaus, where Swiss German usage clipped the middle vowel to Niklaus. Devotion to Saint Nicholas of Myra carried the name across Europe from the Middle Ages onward, and the same saint, by way of the Dutch Sinterklaas, became Santa Claus. Switzerland has its own bearer in Niklaus von Flüe, the fifteenth-century hermit known as Bruder Klaus, long honored as a patron of the country. In American records the spelling is a recent arrival, its visibility helped along by Niklaus Mikaelson, the central figure of the television series The Originals.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Comes with short forms already in circulation — Klaus, Nico, Nick — so there is no need to invent one.
  • Instantly recognizable as a form of Nicholas, which means strangers can read and say it even if they have not met the spelling.
  • Documented across Europe for many centuries and still current in German, Swiss and Dutch families.
  • Rare enough in American records that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
What to consider
  • Expect steady correction. Nicholas, Niklas, Nikolaus and the surname spelling Nicklaus are all close neighbors, and forms will come back wrong more often than not.
  • The pronunciation genuinely splits — NIK-lowss in the German manner, NIK-luss in flatter American mouths. Worth deciding early which one you will correct people towards.
  • Klaus is the natural nickname, and in the US it drags Santa Claus along behind it for a few years of primary school. Nico and Nick are there if that wears thin.
  • In American records this is a very young name, so it reads as contemporary here even though it is centuries old in Switzerland and Germany.
