The name begins as Greek Lysandros, borne most famously by the Spartan naval commander who brought the Peloponnesian War to its end in the late fifth century BC. Latin carried it forward as Lysander, and Shakespeare gave that form to one of the young lovers lost in the wood in A Midsummer Night's Dream. In the Romance languages the ending softened and the y became an i: Lisandro in Spanish, Portuguese and Italian. It traveled to the United States mainly along Spanish-speaking routes, which is why it is best represented today in California, Texas and Florida.
