Where it comes from
From Antonius to Antwain
The story of Antwain
Antoine de Saint-Exupery flew mail routes over the Sahara and the Andes before the war and wrote about it, and then wrote a children's book that has been translated into more languages than almost anything except the Bible. He was too old to fly combat missions and got himself reinstated anyway. The bracelet found in 1998 carried his name and his wife's, and the identification of the wreck settled a fifty-year argument. The spelling question here is smaller and purely technical: French oi is a sound English has no letter for, and American respelling reaches for w, which gets close enough and looks nothing like the original.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Antoine is the French form of Antonius, a Roman clan name of no established meaning, possibly Etruscan. Antwain writes the French ending with a w, which is what American spelling does with a vowel English does not have. Neither the name nor the respelling carries a documented sense.

The Hideo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Antwain's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hideo climbed just as high around 1925, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hideo's path sketches the road Antwain is walking now.

The trade-off
- Two syllables with an unmistakable stress.
- The spelling is read correctly by English speakers, which Antoine is not.
- Three short forms, one of which is a word in its own right.
- Antoine is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected toward it.
- Antwaine, Antwan and Antwon are all in use, so the spelling will be given.
- The French name has no established meaning, so there is none to inherit.
