English keeps an h in Nicholas that French threw away. The Greek is Nikolaos, with no h at all; Latin added one in some spellings; French settled on Nicolas and English on Nicholas, and the letter has been arguing ever since. Nicholette carries the English h into a French ending, which makes it a hybrid of two spelling traditions that disagree.

Where it comes from

The story of Nicholette

Nicholas of Myra became one of the most widely venerated saints in Christendom, and every European language built women's forms on his name — Nicole and Nicolette in French, Nicoletta in Italian, Nikoleta in Greek. Nicole reached wide American use in the 1970s and 1980s, and the longer forms followed. Nicholette is the American arrangement: an English h, a French ending, and a doubled t that neither language requires. It appears in the record from the late 1940s and peaked in the early 1990s.

Meaning

victory of the people

From the Greek nike, victory, and laos, the people. It is a compound of the plainest sort and nothing about it is contested. The -ette ending is French and adds affection rather than meaning, so the name is a small version of a large claim.

Pronouncing Nicholette

nik-uh-LET

Three syllables with the stress at the back, which the -ette ending guarantees. The h is silent in every version of this name in every language, which is what makes the argument about it so long-running and so pointless.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three short forms are available and they belong to three different generations.
  • The meaning is clean, documented and takes three words to give.
  • The saint behind it is honored in both the Eastern and Western churches.
  • It is entirely readable on sight.
What to consider
  • Nicolette is the standard French spelling and will be written instead.
  • Ten letters for three syllables is a lot to dictate.
  • The h is silent and adds nothing but a letter, which someone will point out.
