Arrianna
Feminine · “most holy”
Ariadne, Arianna and Ariana are all the same name, separated by two thousand years and three languages. The woman at the start of it gave a stranger a ball of thread so he could find his way back out of a labyrinth, and then he abandoned her on an island — which is a great deal of story for a name that now reads simply as pretty.

The story of Arrianna
Ariadne is a daughter of Minos of Crete. When Theseus comes to kill the Minotaur she gives him thread to mark his way through the labyrinth; he takes her away and leaves her on Naxos, where the god Dionysus finds her. Italian made Arianna from the Greek, Spanish made Ariana, and both reached America in the twentieth century — Ariana rising very sharply in recent decades. Once a name is being given in those numbers the spellings multiply, and doubling a consonant is the least disruptive way to make one distinct. The extra r changes nothing anyone can hear.
Meaning
most holy
From the Greek Ariadne, usually read as an intensifying prefix joined to a word meaning holy or pure — so most holy or utterly pure. The name is pre-classical and appears in Crete, which fits: Ariadne belongs to the Minoan layer of Greek myth rather than to the Olympian one.

Four syllables, stress on the third. The doubled r makes no difference to the sound — English does not lengthen a consonant the way Italian does, so the extra letter is purely visual.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Korey test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Arrianna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Korey climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Korey's path sketches the road Arrianna is walking now.
Arrianna sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Three completely different short forms are available, all of them standing names.
- The Greek original has one of the best-known stories in myth attached to it.
- It is recognizable in every European language and needs no translation.
- The meaning is short and entirely positive.
- Arianna and Ariana are both far commoner and will be written instead.
- The doubled r is inaudible, so the spelling has to be dictated every time.
- The name family has been very well used recently, so a girl will meet near-namesakes.
