Alexsandra
Feminine · “defender of men”
Slip an s into Alexandra and two familiar names appear where there had been one: Alex and Sandra, both of them standing names, both of them already the usual short forms. That is what this spelling does. The name it alters is Greek and very old, and it means something quite specific — the one who defends men, which was a description of a warrior rather than a wish for a child.

The story of Alexsandra
Alexander became one of the most widely spread names on earth after a Macedonian king carried it from Greece to the Indus, and the feminine went with it. It became a Russian imperial name, a Danish and British royal one, and an ordinary name across most of Europe. In America the short forms Alex and Sandra both became independent names, which is unusual — most names give up one nickname, not two from opposite ends. The s-spelling makes both of them visible at once, and its record here runs from the early twentieth century onward, strongest where Slavic and Spanish-speaking families settled.
Meaning
defender of men
From the Greek alexein, to defend or ward off, and aner, a man, in the form andros. Alexandra is the feminine of Alexandros, and both are attested in Greek long before Alexander the Great — the name appears in Homer as an alternative name for a Trojan prince, and on Mycenaean tablets centuries earlier.

Four syllables, stress on the third. The added s makes no difference to the sound at all — the x already carries a k and an s, so the extra letter is doing purely visual work.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
