This is the older English spelling; the modern transliteration writes it differently and means exactly the same thing.

Where it comes from

The story of Ranee

English took an unusual amount from the languages of India and mostly forgot where it came from. Bungalow, shampoo, pajamas, verandah, jungle, loot, thug, bangle, cot and dozens more arrived through the same channels in the same period, and almost none of them feels foreign now. The words for rank came too: rajah, ranee, nabob and maharajah were all in ordinary English use by the nineteenth century, generally in writing about India and sometimes sarcastically about people at home. This one has stayed a word rather than becoming ordinary vocabulary, which means an English speaker meeting the name may well know exactly what it says.

Meaning

queen

The Hindi word means a queen or a princess, feminine of the word for a king, and the reading is settled. The English spelling with a doubled e is a Victorian convention for representing the long final vowel, which modern transliteration writes with a single i. The two are the same word and the difference is a century of changing practice.

How the name formed

  1. A Hindi word for a queen
  2. Borrowed into English in the seventeenth century
  3. Written with a doubled e by Victorian convention
  4. Used as an American first name from the twentieth century

Ranee sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1971, with 71 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Ranee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is short, clear and rather grand, and it is in the dictionary.
  • It is a genuine word in two languages rather than an invented shape.
  • Rani is available as the modern spelling for anyone who prefers it.
What to consider
  • The word means queen, which is a substantial thing to hand a child.
  • The stress is unsettled between the English and the Hindi reading.
  • Rani is the standard modern spelling and this one looks Victorian.
