Makynzie
Feminine · “son of Coinneach”
Three letters are changed here at once: the c is gone from the front, a y replaces the e in the middle, and the ending keeps the full zie. That is about as thoroughly respelled as a name gets while remaining instantly recognizable. The family underneath held Kintail on the west coast of Scotland and became Earls of Seaforth.

The story of Makynzie
Clan Mackenzie built its power around Kintail and Eilean Donan and became one of the dominant families of the northwest Highlands, holding the earldom of Seaforth until it was forfeited after a Jacobite rising. The surname reached America with Highland emigration and crossed to first-name use in the twentieth century, then to girls in the 1980s. The respellings followed at once, and this is among the most thorough of them — it appears in the record from 1997 and peaked in 2011, which is late in the name's American career.
Meaning
son of Coinneach
From the Gaelic Mac Coinnich, son of Coinneach — the name English turned into Kenneth. None of the three changed letters affects the sound; they are visual decisions, and each of them marks the name as a particular family's version.

Pronouncing Makynzie
muh-KEN-zee
Three syllables, stress in the middle. The y in the second syllable is said as a short e, which is what English does with y in an unstressed position — so it changes nothing at all.

The Marlina test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Makynzie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marlina climbed just as high around 1978, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marlina's path sketches the road Makynzie is walking now.
Makynzie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off

- It is readable on sight despite the three changes.
- Three altered letters means dictating the spelling letter by letter, permanently.
- Mackenzie is the standard spelling and will be written instead almost always.
- It belongs to the later part of one naming wave and dates a child closely.
