Briyanna
Feminine · “high”
Brianna is usually described as the Irish feminine of Brian. It is more honest to say it was made in America. Ireland has used Brian for a thousand years and produced no standard feminine of it; the women's version appears in the United States in the twentieth century and grows from there. Briyanna adds a y to that already-modern name, which makes it a modern name twice over.

The story of Briyanna
Brian Boru was High King of Ireland and died at Clontarf in 1014 in a battle his side won; the name followed him, becoming one of the standard Irish men's names and then, through emigration, a standard American one. Making a women's version by adding -a or -na is an English-language habit rather than an Irish one, and Brianna is its product — first in the United States, then exported back. Once it was widely given, the spellings multiplied as they always do, and the y in this one is doing what a y usually does: separating two vowels and marking the name as a family's own.

high, noble
Brian's own meaning has never been settled. The readings usually offered are high or noble, from an Old Celtic element, and strong — neither demonstrated. The name is old enough that its speakers had lost the answer before anything was written down. Whatever it means, the feminine built on it in America inherits the uncertainty.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off
- Bri and Anna are both complete standing names, so it shortens two very different ways.
- The sound is entirely familiar to American ears and needs no explanation.
- Three open syllables sit well after almost any surname.
- Brianna, Breanna, Bryanna and Briana all compete, so the spelling has to be dictated forever.
- The name is often presented as ancient Irish and is not, which a child may find out later.
- The whole family has been heavily used, so a girl will meet many near-namesakes.
