Nayely
Feminine
Spanish has a spelling rule English lacks: the vowel sound /i/ is written y at the end of a native word. Rey, hoy, muy, ley, soy. Nayely obeys it. The spelling that looks to English eyes like an American respelling of Nayeli is in fact the more Spanish of the two, and it climbs through the 1990s to peak in 2001.

Our story of Nayely
Our reading is that Nayely is a Mexican-American formation of the late twentieth century, made the way most names in that period were made: a pleasant three-syllable shape, a first syllable drawn from a small stock of stems already in use, and an ending chosen from the ones Spanish orthography allows. What makes it interesting is the y. American respellings usually add a y where English would not have one. Here the y is correct: Spanish writes final /i/ as y by rule. So a spelling that reads as invention to an English speaker reads as orthodox to a Spanish one. The name spread by ear inside Mexican-American communities before it appeared in any book, which is why the printed glosses arrived after the name did rather than before.

Mexican name books widely gloss Nayeli and Nayely as Zapotec for I love you. No Zapotec dictionary or grammar supports this. Zapotec is not one language but a family of several dozen varieties spoken in Oaxaca, and none of the documented ones contains a word of this shape with that sense. The gloss appears to have entered circulation through popular name lists in the 1990s and has been copied ever since. The name itself is first visible in United States birth records in the early 1980s. Its meaning is undocumented.

Pronouncing Nayely
nah-YEH-lee
Three syllables, stress on the second. The final y is a vowel, not a consonant, so the name ends in the sound of ee. English speakers sometimes say nah-YEL-ee, closing the second syllable, or NAY-lee with two syllables.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Elayne test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nayely's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Elayne climbed just as high around 1924, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Elayne's path sketches the road Nayely is walking now.

The trade-off
- The spelling is orthographically correct Spanish rather than an improvised respelling.
- It is instantly readable in Spanish-speaking settings.
- Naye and Nay give a short form in either language.
- Nayeli is the more common spelling in the United States and will be assumed.
- The Zapotec meaning attached to it in name books is not supported by any source.
- English speakers often read the final y as a consonant on first sight.
