Where it comes from

The story of Elayne

Old French took Helene and made Elaine, and the Arthurian romances gave the name to several characters — the mother of Galahad, and the Elaine of Astolat who dies for love of Lancelot and floats downriver to Camelot. Tennyson retold that story in 1859 and made the name fashionable in English. Elayne is a twentieth-century American respelling that fixes the final vowel.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Helen's own origin is genuinely unsettled. The most-cited reading connects it to a Greek root for a torch or light; others propose a word for a wicker basket or a pre-Greek source entirely. Elaine is the Old French development and carries the same uncertainty.

Elayne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 102 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Elayne went to 40 girls in 2025, but Elaine is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 1,047, which makes it the 300th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,412 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,535 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 40,182 for Elayne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented chain back to one of the oldest names in Greek literature.
  • Lainie and Ellie are both usable short forms with their own lives.
  • Read correctly on sight by every English speaker.
What to consider
  • Elaine is the standard spelling and will be written for her constantly.
  • The Arthurian Elaine dies of unrequited love, which is well enough known to follow the name.
  • The meaning is genuinely unknown despite the name's age.
