Where it comes from

Our story of Aubrianna

Ours, offered as ours. Alberic was a real Frankish name and also the name of the dwarf king in Germanic legend, which is where the elf-ruler reading comes from most vividly — the elves of that tradition were powerful figures, not small ones. Aubrey descends from it and moved from men to women in twentieth-century America. Aubrianna extends it again with an Italianate ending, so the name now has a Frankish elf at one end and a Romance suffix at the other.

Meaningscholars disagree

elf ruler

Aubrey is documented: from Germanic Alberic, joining alb, an elf, to ric, a ruler; Norman French made Auberi and English Aubrey. Whether Aubrianna was built on it deliberately or assembled from Aubri- and -anna is not recorded.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aubrianna went to 40 girls in 2025, but Aubriana is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 65, which makes it the 895th most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,817 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 24,727 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 40,182 for Aubrianna itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Aubrey and Anna are both complete names in their own right.
  • A documented Germanic meaning with a genuinely memorable image.
  • Read correctly on sight by most English speakers.
What to consider
  • Nine letters and four syllables is a great deal for early handwriting.
  • Aubrianna, Aubriana and Aubreanna are all in use and none is dominant.
  • There is no documented meaning for the compound, only for its front half.
