The story of Navid
Persian's script is Arabic and about half its formal vocabulary is Arabic loanwords, which leads a great many people to assume the languages are related. They are not. Persian belongs to the Iranian branch of Indo-European, the same family as English, Greek and Hindi, and Arabic belongs to the Semitic family with Hebrew and Amharic. The relationship is visible once the loanwords are set aside: Persian do is two, se is three, chahar is four, and they line up with Latin duo, tres, quattuor. Nam is a name, mordan is to die, and the negative prefix na- is the same one that gives English un- and Greek a-. What makes this hard to see is the writing system, which was adopted after the Arab conquest and which suppresses short vowels, so Persian words look Arabic on the page and behave like European ones in the grammar.
Meaning
Persian navid, good news or glad tidings
From Persian navid, good news, an announcement of something welcome, and by extension a promise or a hopeful sign. It is a common modern Iranian given name. The word is Persian rather than Arabic, and Persian, unlike Arabic, is an Indo-European language, so its native vocabulary is cognate with Latin, Greek, Sanskrit and English. It peaks in the American data in 1990.

The Imari test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Navid's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Imari climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Imari's path sketches the road Navid is walking now.
Navid sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
