The story of Nam
Vietnamese given names are ordinary words, and a very large share of the vocabulary is Sino-Vietnamese, borrowed from Chinese over a thousand years of contact and administration. That gives most names a written Chinese character behind them, even though Vietnamese has been written in the Latin alphabet since the seventeenth century and officially since the twentieth. Roman letters plus diacritics record the sound and the tone but not the character, so a name like Nam loses the distinction between south and male that the writing system used to carry, and American records drop the diacritics too, losing the tone as well. What arrives on a birth certificate is three letters that could be either word. The country's own name has the same structure: Viet, the people, and Nam, south, distinguishing them from the Viet peoples further north.
Meaning
Vietnamese nam, south
Nam is a Vietnamese given name from the word for south, itself a borrowing from Chinese nan. The same word forms the second element of Viet Nam. A homophone in Vietnamese means male or man, also from Chinese, and the two are not distinguished in Roman letters without tone marks. The American peak is 1984, with post-1975 refugee arrivals and their children.

The Remo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Nam's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Remo climbed just as high around 1932, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Remo's path sketches the road Nam is walking now.
Nam sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
