Our story of Naiya
Ours, offered as ours. The naiads were the nymphs of fresh water — of a particular spring, a particular stream — and Greek thought of them as bound to that water rather than merely living in it: if the spring dried, the naiad died with it. That is a precise and rather severe idea about place. Whether Naiya descends from it is doubtful, but the word is worth knowing about.

Not established
Greek naias names a water nymph. Hindi naya means new. Arabic and Swahili offer further candidates. The modern American Naiya is likelier a spelling of Naya or Nya than a borrowing from any of these.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Naiya went to 30 girls in 2025, but Naya, Naia and Nayah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 546, which makes it the 493rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,053 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 2,944 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 53,576 for Naiya itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
