The story of Naia
Naia is a current Basque name and has risen sharply in Spain since the 2000s. Separately, the naiads of Greek myth presided over springs, wells and fountains, and were held to be mortal — they died when their spring dried. Both routes brought the name to America, where it appears in the registers from the 2010s and is in current use.

wave; water nymph
Two routes. The Basque naia, 'wave', which is a genuine word and a current Basque name. Or the Greek naias, 'naiad', from naein, 'to flow' — the freshwater nymphs of springs and streams. Both are documented and the modern name draws on either.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Naia went to 133 girls in 2025, but Naya, Naiya and Nayah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 546, which makes it the 493rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,088 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 2,944 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 12,085 for Naia itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Sonjia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Naia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sonjia climbed just as high around 1967, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sonjia's path sketches the road Naia is walking now.
Naia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Two genuine traditions can claim it, one Basque and one Greek.
- The mortal-nymph detail is a genuinely striking piece of classical myth.
- Four letters, two syllables, and never misheard.
- The origin is genuinely split between two unrelated languages.
- Naya and Maya are close enough to cause confusion.
- The syllable count differs between Basque and English readings.
