The title was used across the Persianate world — Safavid Iran, the Mughal empire, Central Asia — and traveled with Persian as a language of administration. It became a hereditary honorific in many families and then simply a name. Mirza Ghalib, the greatest of Urdu poets, carried it as a title; Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, the founder of the Ahmadiyya movement, as a name. It is also a common Bosnian men's name, arriving with Ottoman rule, and Bosnian refugee communities after 1995 are a substantial part of its American record; the peak in 2001 sits with them and with South Asian immigration together.
