The story of Mihira
Mithra is one of the oldest named gods in the Indo-Iranian world, invoked as the guardian of agreements and identified with the sun. Persian carried the name forward as Mihr, and Sanskrit took mihira from it as an ordinary word for the sun — which is why the great sixth-century Indian astronomer is remembered as Varahamihira, with the sun's name in his own. The feminine Mihira is a modern given name built on that word, and it reaches United States records with Indian families. Its Persian ancestry gives it an unusually long passport.
Meaning
the sun
Sanskrit mihira means the sun. It is not a native Sanskrit formation: it comes from Middle Persian Mihr, itself from the older Mithra, the Indo-Iranian god of oaths and of the sun. The borrowing is well documented — Indian astronomy took a great deal from Persia — and the reading is not in dispute.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. English speakers sometimes say MY-hir-ah, giving the first vowel an English long i, which is not how the word runs in either Sanskrit or Persian.

The Sonali test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Mihira's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sonali climbed just as high around 2000, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sonali's path sketches the road Mihira is walking now.
Mihira sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented meaning with an unusually long and traceable history across two language families.
- Six letters, no silent ones, and every sound available in English.
- Mihir stands beside it as the masculine form, so it sits in a family rather than alone.
- English speakers reach for an English long i in the first syllable until corrected.
- Mihira, Meehira and Mihiraa all circulate in American records.
- It is close enough to Mira and Meera to be misheard as either.
