The story of Eugenia
Eugenia was carried by an early martyr whose legend has her enter a monastery in men's clothing, and the name was used across the Greek and Latin churches. It became a substantial name in Spain, Italy and Russia, and the Empress Eugénie of France made it visible in the nineteenth century. American use peaked around 1918.
Meaning
well-born, noble
From the Greek eugenes — eu, 'well', and genos, 'birth' or 'race'. The compound is transparent and the sense is nobility of descent. The English 'eugenics' was coined from the same elements in 1883 and has burdened the word since.
