I

Where it comes from

The story of Wisdom

Puritan naming in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries produced a long list of virtue names — Faith, Hope, Charity, Prudence, Temperance, Mercy, Verity — and a few grander ones besides. Wisdom belongs to that habit, though its modern American use is more recent and reaches the record largely through West African and African-American families, where virtue names such as Blessing, Precious, Gift and Wisdom are ordinary rather than remarkable. In Ghana and Nigeria in particular the practice is common and unselfconscious.

Meaning

wisdom; the quality of judging well

Old English wisdom, built from wis, 'wise', and the suffix -dom, which makes a state or condition — the same ending in freedom and kingdom. The word is entirely native English rather than a Latin borrowing, which is unusual for an abstract noun of this weight. The reading is exact.

Wisdom sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2025, with 61 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Wisdom went to 61 girls in 2025, but Wysdom is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 72, which makes it the 888th most-given girls’ name of the year — 1,890 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 22,323 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 26,349 for Wisdom itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Said and spelled correctly by every English speaker without being told.
  • A native English word with a clean and exact meaning rather than a borrowed gloss.
  • Firmly established in West African naming, so it is a real name rather than an experiment.
What to consider
  • It is a large quality to name a child for, and it will be remarked on.
  • Virtue names put a claim on the child that they did not make for themselves.
  • In the United States it is uncommon enough that it will be assumed to be a surname or a translation.
