Where it comes from

The story of Allanah

Nineteenth-century novels and songs about Ireland are full of these words, spelled by ear by writers who did not read Irish, and they entered English as terms of affection with no idea of their grammar attached. A leanbh is what an Irish speaker says to a child, and the a is the same particle Latin used in its vocative and English has lost entirely. The name is worth separating from a near neighbor: Alana and Alanna come from Alan, a Breton man's name, and have nothing to do with any of this. Allanah and Alannah come from the endearment. They have converged in American use to the point where most families use whichever spelling they prefer.

Meaning

O child

From Irish a leanbh, a form of address meaning O child, used to a child or a loved one. The a at the front is the Irish vocative particle, not part of the noun. Because it was heard as one word it entered Anglo-Irish writing as alannah, a term of endearment, and became a name from there.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Allanah went to 7 girls in 2025, but Alana, Alanna and Alannah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 3,429, which makes it the 82nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 11,850 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 469 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Allanah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Irish meaning that is a whole phrase rather than a single word.
  • Three short forms of very different registers.
  • Three open syllables with a regular stress that people read correctly.
What to consider
  • Alannah, Alanna and Alana are all commoner and none of them is quite this name.
  • It is a term of endearment rather than a name in Irish, which some Irish speakers will point out.
  • The doubled l and the final h are both silent decisions and add nothing you can hear.
