Where it comes from

The story of Bennie

Benjamin is Jacob's youngest son, named by his dying mother with a name of sorrow that his father changed to something better — one of the few renamings the text records. Benedict comes from a different world entirely, the Latin church, and gave Europe a monastic order. English shortened both to Ben and softened that to Bennie. The girls' use is genuinely old in America: the -ie short forms were given to daughters in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries far more freely than in the decades that followed, and Bennie belongs to that earlier openness rather than to the recent revival of it.

Meaningscholars disagree

son of the right hand — or blessed

Benjamin is Hebrew ben-yamin, 'son of the right hand', and since Hebrew orients by facing east, the right hand is the south — so the name also means son of the south. Benedict is Latin benedictus, 'blessed', literally well-spoken-of. Bennie serves both, and it also stands as a short form for Benedetta and Bernice. Which long name a particular Bennie has behind her is a family matter.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Warm and informal without being newly invented — it has a long American record for both sexes.
  • Benjamin, Benedetta and Bernice all stand behind it as longer formal options.
  • Impossible to mispronounce and easy for a small child to write.
What to consider
  • It is overwhelmingly a boys' short form now, and a girl will be read as a boy on paper.
  • Bennie and Benny both circulate, so the ending will be asked about.
  • As a diminutive it looks informal on documents wanting a full legal name.
