The story of Bennie
Benjamin is the youngest of Jacob's twelve sons and the ancestor of a tribe, and the name reached English through the Reformation, becoming a Puritan and then a general favorite. Its affectionate form Bennie was registered as a legal name in American records from the 1880s, when the -ie ending was applied to Willie, Jimmie, Eddie and Freddie alike. Bennie peaked around 1928.
Meaning
son of the right hand
From the Hebrew Binyamin — ben, 'son', and yamin, 'right hand'. Genesis has the mother name him Ben-Oni, 'son of my sorrow', as she dies, and the father rename him Binyamin. The right hand carried senses of favor, strength and the south, and all three have been read into it.
