The story of Amour
Latin amor passed into Old French as amur and then amour, and English took it in the Middle Ages as a loanword for love of the courtly kind — which is why it survives in paramour and in a handful of set phrases rather than as an everyday English word. As a given name it is very recent and American, part of a small group of borrowed love-words used as names: Amour, Amora, Amoura, Amore. Its French dress is doing most of the work, and the word itself is not French in origin but Latin, arriving through France on the way here.
Meaning
love
French amour, from Latin amor, from amare, 'to love'. The Latin word is one of the most durable in the language and gave every Romance language its own version: amore, amor, amour. The reading could not be more direct, and the name is the word.

The Deserae test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Amour's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Deserae climbed just as high around 1992, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Deserae's path sketches the road Amour is walking now.
Amour sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is immediate and needs no explaining in any Western country.
- Two syllables, five letters, and no silent letters an English speaker has to learn.
- Recognizable across French, Spanish, Italian and English at once.
- It is the word for love applied to a person, which is a large thing to say on a child's behalf.
- The French pronunciation will not survive an American classroom intact.
- Amour, Amoure and Amore are all in use, and Amore is Italian rather than French.
