The story of Sonali
Sonali is a modern Indian name rather than a Sanskrit one, formed in the vernacular languages of the north and east, and it has been ordinary in Bengal, Maharashtra and the Hindi belt through the second half of the twentieth century. Sonali Bendre's film career from 1994 gave it national visibility in India. American records show it from the 1970s with Indian professional migration and a peak in 2000, which fits the general profile of Indian names in the American data — a slow rise with the community rather than a sharp spike with a single bearer.
Meaning
Golden
From Hindi and Bengali sona, gold, itself from Sanskrit suvarṇa, of good color, which is the ordinary Sanskrit word for gold. The -li or -ali ending forms an adjective. The reading is settled and transparent to any Hindi or Bengali speaker; the same root gives the names Sonal, Sona and Suvarna.

The Eldean test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sonali's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eldean climbed just as high around 1921, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eldean's path sketches the road Sonali is walking now.
Sonali sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
